  Dear Mr Earle,

I understand completely if this does not reach you but at least I can say I tried. I am writing to ask a favour.

My name is Arley Black, I am 19 years old and live in Newcastle, Australia. My boyfriend (Nicholas) and I have been together for almost a year now and a big part of his life I have come to love is you. A few years back, Nicholas's cousin took his own life and at such a young age, it shook not only his family but the whole community. To be honest, I am not exactly sure of all the finer details as its something I'm not sure I want to ask about. His favourite song was Copperhead Road and as appropriate, this song saw his body be lowered to the earth. That moment is the reason his family find comfort in the sound of your voice.

After months of Nicholas listening to your music at ridiculous levels, I learnt to love your story and music too. Being a hopeful musician myself I find hope and answers in your writing.

I tried but was unable to purchase tickets to your show which was right down the road from my house in Newcastle. Instead, knowing I could not miss the opportunity for Nicholas to see you, I drove him to Sydney for a surprise and we sat just 11 rows from the front and were memorised for the hours you stood before us. The moment you sang the song that brought so many good and bad memories back to Nick was indescribably emotional. He recorded the moment on his phone so he could have a little piece of comfort in his pocket all the time. 

However, a few days ago Nicholas was having a terrible day and to top it off had somehow accidentally deleted the recording. He was nothing short of devastated.

This is where I ask of your help. It is his birthday on the 21st of May and I would love to restore the joy you gave him at The Concourse, Chatswood. All I ask is a note, or a letter or a recording personalised to someone who, at 20 years old, idolises you. If you even get to read this far, you may think I'm unrealistic and crazy. But that's something I happy to be labelled if I can make Nicholas smile the way he did when he say in front of you.
